the doctor nor on medications. He thought it would cure itself. One day a call from the patient came
told to call an ambulance …. he died that night in the hospital. We don’t know how much money he
had in the bank, but it is of no use now.
Next is the patient with a cracked filling. Here we have the attitude that it is not hurting so why do
anything about it. Time will take its toll and the cracked filling will break in two perhaps at Sunday
dinner. Now the cracked tooth needs a crown. Neglect, in this case, has ended costing many times
more than if he had had it fixed in the first place instead of waiting.
Our next issue is that of a patient who has had a root canal. Root canal teeth become brittle and
must have a crown to cover and protect the tooth. Again the patient said no …. could not afford a
crown. Within a year the tooth breaks at the gum line…needs an extraction and also a 3-unit bridge
to replace the missing tooth. The story gets worse. The patient decides he can get along with out
that tooth and will hold off on the bridge. What happens next over a period of time is that the tooth
below super erupts growing up into the empty space, the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth crowd
forward and it becomes a mission impossible ….. there is no longer a proper space to replace the
missing tooth and the solution is now 3 times as expensive.
No one likes root canals …. even dentists. A decision not to have a root canal in a timely manner will
lead to disaster ... an infection, pain, and surgery to remove the bad tooth. We are then faced with
the same scenario as the case of the missing tooth in the patient above.
Perhaps the patient that needed the root canal decides to wait … hoping it will not become a
problem. Puss forms around the infected tooth, swelling of the tissue around the tooth occurs, and
he is in real trouble. Dental infections have an affinity for heart muscle, so if you are a patient with
heart problems …. BEWARE: Taking antibiotics is not the easy answer.
Our last problem case is the patient who does not want to go to a specialist. A Dentist refers a
patient to a specialist because you might say the problem is out of his expertise. Please, trust the
doctor's judgment. Appreciate the fact that the doctor is not going to try to do something he is not
fully capable of doing.
We all put things off … very often until it is too late. Prevention is the key. It is easier to prevent an
infection than to stop it once it has a hold on you.
These are all real occurrences. This year we have found 6 cases of cancer or tumors, and one of AIDS
…. an unusually high number. In the States, we would find perhaps 2 or 3 a year seeing ten times the
number of patients as here. However, we have an older and more diverse population to see.
Paradise will not last for long unless you take care of yourself !!!!

This is not a story of a high school blind date….I hope you noticed the title. In
fact it is a rather sad story of patients telling the doctor NO when it comes to
doing a procedure the doctor feels is needed. This can apply to the dentist or
any other doctor.
Let me tell you a story that just happened to me. I had a patient I had seen
regularly for some time, but on this visit the patient …. middle aged … declined
x-rays. The exam and cleaning went smoothly and all appeared to be in order.
Within 6 weeks after the check up, the patient appears complaining of a
swelling of the tongue and a lump in the throat area on the same side. It did
not look good.
Fortunately he had IMSS coverage and has undergone a full work up …. as good
or better than he would have received at the renown Mayo Clinic. The final
report is due early next week and we are all hoping for the best. This tumor
developed so quickly … within 6 weeks … it is alarming and a red flag. Had we
been able to take the x-rays at the check up appointment, chances are that
early evidence of the problem would have appeared.
