Inlay/Onlays
When a critical area of a tooth’s biting surface is damaged, We will often
suggest an inlay or onlay restoration.

What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are fillings that are made of cast porcelain or gold alloy. They
are cemented or bonded into the prepared tooth replacing the critical area of
the tooth. An inlay usually fits into the central biting surface of the tooth and
may include one or more of the sides of the tooth. An onlay usually has a larger
area of coverage, and most often includes one or more of the large cusps of a
tooth.

Traditionally, gold has been the material of choice for inlays and onlays. In
recent years, however, ceramic porcelain has become increasingly popular. This
is due to the technical ability to match it to natural tooth color. Although the
porcelain fillings are a ceramic glass material, they are impressively strong and
resilient when used properly.

Procedure:
Inlays and onlays require two appointments to complete the procedure. During
the first visit, the filling being replaced or the damaged or decaying area of the
tooth is removed, and the tooth is prepared for the inlay or onlay. Impressions
and models of the tooth are taken. We will then place a temporary filling in the
tooth and schedule the next appointment. The impressions and models are
delivered to the lab where the inlay or onlay is fabricated.

At the second appointment, the temporary filling is removed. The Doctors will
then make sure that the inlay or onlay fits correctly and make any final
adjustments. The inlay or onlay will then be cemented or bonded into the tooth.
